Winter Skincare 101

The sudden change in the weather as the season transitions from a warm summer, to a cozier fall, and now a very chilly winter, can take a toll on our skin.

Some products that might have worked for us in the heat, might not be effective anymore in these colder temperatures. Just like with clothing, we tend to adjust our skincare products according to the weather and conditions that we live in.

It can get frustrating if a product which has been your go-to, your holy grail, so to speak, is just not delivering the results that it once did. But at the end of the day, you have to pay attention to your skin type and whatever its particular needs are. You would have to consider the effects of cold temperatures on your skin, and determine which types of products are actually effective.

How can you best treat your skin in the winter season? Here are a few choice tips:

  1. Moisturize! - Dry skin is more common in the cold weather, so you would have up your moisturizer game. Oil-based products are more likely to retain moisture and might be more effective.

  2. Stay hydrated. – In keeping with the theme of avoiding dry skin, it is important to keep hydrated and refreshed.

  3. Don’t over-exfoliate. – Dry skin is more sensitive and can be damaged even further due to too much exfoliation. For most skin types, doing this once a week is suggested.

  4. Mind your wellness. – Fruits and vegetables are not only packed with vitamins and antioxidants, but they are also very hydrating and can boost your overall health.

  5. Keep using sunscreen. – Gloomy skies might tempt us to skip sunscreen altogether, but this is still an essential step. UV rays don’t take a break during winter.

  6. Consult a dermatologist.- It is always important to have your skin checked by a professional, especially if you have ongoing skin issues that most likely won’t be fully combated by your usual products.

An added bonus: here are a few recommended products to get you started on updating your skincare routine.

  • The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution (exfoliating)

  • Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser (cleansing)

  • Eucerin Advanced Repair Lotion (moisturizing)

  • SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 (moisturizing)
