From the latest news, we have learned that the Met Gala 2020 has been postponed due to the global chaos.
When at the beginning of March 2020, the disease started spreading around the globe, the insiders refused to postpone Met Gala, but due to the present situation, they have been forced to give in.
Every year we assist to a red carpet runway (second after the Oscars Night), where we can see incredible and sometimes bizarre looks, forgetting what that event is about and a lot of people don’t know it is mainly a charity event for the Costume Institute.
It was established for the first time in 1948 by the new yorker fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, who has always been the promoter of New York as a new fashion capital.
In the beginning, it was for real, just a charity event calling only the elites all around the States with tickets that cost only $50 each. When Diana Vreeland became editor in chief of Vogue America, she transformed this event; it became not only an occasion to raise some money but also a chance to celebrate the fashion creativity. For this reason, she decided to create a styling guideline theme for every year, which is something that still applies today.
Some looks have become memorable together with the celebrities who have worn them, let’s now have a look at the most memorable looks of the last five years:
This theme represents the impact of the Asian culture and fashion on the western one. Not all the celebrities who took part in this annual event followed the style guidelines. If there is someone who always following them is Rihanna. At the Met Gala 2015, she showed up wearing a yellow, fur-trimmed cape, made by Guo Pei. She certainly was on point with the theme and the origins of this dress!
Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology
The title of this theme is pretty much self-explanatory; it celebrates the union between the use of the human resources and the machine in fashion. During this Met Gala, many have been the celebrity who has decided to go for a metallic-sparkling-futuristic look.
Famous is the image of the beautiful couple Gigi – Zayan, the model wearing a metallic dress by Tommy Hilfiger, and her sweetheart is wearing a black suit with sleeves that almost look like an armor by Versace.
Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons Art of the In-Between
In 2017 The Met Gale decided to celebrate the incredible work of Rei Kawakubo and her fashion brand Comme de Garcon.
In her creations, you can see abstract concepts such as war/peace – absence/presence and so on
Once again, under the spotlight, we have Rihanna with her abstract look in Dsquared2. I am wondering how she can sit in that dress…
Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination
For sure, The Met Gala 2018 has seen a lot of creativity in the looks; whether you are a saint or a sinner, this is the best theme for you to show it all!
Some of the most incredible looks for this Met gala come from:
JLO in Balmain with a big Cross on the chest, she is a saint!
Gigi Hadid, if she doesn’t look angelic enough with that face, here she is in a dress that resembles the feathers of angelic wings.
Zendaya goes all the way by wearing and armor-look-like dress by Versace, wondering what she aimed to represent? The Catholic Saint Joan of Arc!
We can’t be quiet about the Pope’s look from Rihanna, and she is invincible it comes to the Met Gala looks!
Protagonists 2018 looks are also the hairstyles from crowns to halos. One of the actresses who is always on the front line when talking about Met Gala looks is certainly Blake lively!
This theme is the triumph of exaggeration and exasperation.
Icon of exaggeration is no doubt, Katy Perry, in Moschino, she is a live chandelier, bizarre, but she didn’t stop there, she became a giant burger during the after party!
One of the celebrities who has gone beyond during the Met Gala 2019 is no doubt, Billy Porter, his entrance is unforgettable; he looks indeed like an Egyptian Pharaoh with his golden wings.
Gaga, did you say? Yes, she was one of the main characters of Met Gala Red Carpet 2019, she rocked the four dresses in one by Brandon Maxwell, always eccentric but classy, Gaga!
The Met Gala 2020 has been postponed to an undefined date, the theme of 2020 would have been About time, appropriate to celebrate the 150th opening of the Institute, the celebration of the fashion history through the decades and beyond. Interesting would be to imagine how celebrities are going to respond to this theme and who will be the best dressed for this occasion, all we can do is to wait for that happy moment.
