Plastic waste today is one of the biggest environmental problems. For every person on the planet, there is one ton of plastic and nearly 80 percent has become plastic waste causing havoc on the oceans around the world.
Big companies are big contributors to the problem. And therefore, the actions that need to be taken are equally as big. Adidas has made a promise to commit to end plastic waste through innovation and partnerships.
However, Adidas being planet considerate is not new. In 1998, Adidas adopted a comprehensive and detailed Restricted Substances Policy for product materials, banning the usage of chemicals being harmful or toxic. At the London Olympic Games, in 2012, Adidas equipped all volunteers with recycled polyester uniforms. In 2015, Adidas and Parley for the Oceans launched a single shoe at the United Nations as part of the long-term eco-innovation partnership.
For this year, more than 50% percent of all the polyester used in products will be recycled. Adidas will also introduce the launch of PRIMEBLUE and PRIMEGREEN performance fabrics, two new sustainable technologies that contain 100% recycled polyester.
PRIMEBLUE, a performance fabric that contains Parley Ocean Plastic, is now included in some of the brand’s most iconic and visible performance products like Ultraboost 20 and the uniforms of some of the biggest leagues and teams in the world.
PRIMEGREEN, a performance fabric that contains no virgin plastic, will be available later this year and will also be featured in key competitive products. Both performance fabrics will play a significant role in Adidas reaching more than 50% total volume of recycled polyester at the end of 2020 and its commitment to end plastic waste.
But, this is not the end. Within the next decade, Adidas is committed to doing even more to end plastic waste.
By 2024, Adidas will have eliminated the virgin plastics and polyesters used in all products. By 2030, Adidas will reduce the company’s carbon footprint by 30 percent as part of the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action. And by 2050, Adidas aims to achieve climate neutrality (in Germany, the company already sources almost all its electricity from renewable sources).
